ANGELA B. of Somerset, PA
PENN FOSTER COLLEGE
2008 OUTSTANDING GRADUATE for DETC.
“The instructors and student services staff at Penn Foster were always available to assist me. I have been able to regularly employ the skills and concepts that I learned in the classroom. I would recommend this course of study to anyone who is considering working with preschool or elementary age children.”
According to the 2008 Outstanding Graduate Program of DETC, “Success as educators is best measured not in terms of standardized test scores by cohorts of students, not by the dry-as-dust metrics for the sundry outcomes assessment programs all of us in education have been engaging in these past few years, and not in completion and job placement statistics. Our success is best viewed through the lens of what happened to those whose lives we have touched: did they put their knowledge and skills to work to make a better life for themselves and their loved ones?”
We are proud to select Angela, Associate of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education, as the Penn Foster College 2008 Outstanding Graduate for DETC. The criteria used in our selection included academic records and the level and quality of their contributions to society and to their chosen professions.
DETC (Distance Education Training Counsel) states in their yearly program featuring distance education success stories, “Angela earned her degree without time away from her family. After three years of working with special needs students, Angela decided that she wanted to further her education in order to better serve her students. She rejected the idea of a traditional college because of commitments to family and students; a residential college would require too much time away from both. Penn Foster College allowed her to pursue her degree without making her leave her family. Angela works full-time as a paraprofessional at the Shanksville Elementary School in Shanksville, PA, in addition to being married and the mother of a teenage son. She still managed to graduate from Penn Foster College with a cumulative average of 95 percent and did an excellent job with her field experience in the program. In addition to receiving an Associate of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education, Angela has also earned the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education Paraprofessional Certificate of Competency.”
